It’s 2022 for crying out loud! How, in today’s world, can any organization risk not paying enough attention to their culture?
A recent survey by Paycor revealed that company culture is the top driver for employee retention which makes it especially important considering the study also indicated that retention is the top priority for companies in 2023.
The biggest concern for any organization should be when their most passionate people become quiet.” - Unknown
I’ve done a fair amount of research on the importance of company culture that has been a hot topic since the onset of “The Great Resignation,” that continues at a near record rate. In my work, I provide a variety of services to help organizations and leaders enhance their culture through transparent and open communication.
I have also experienced and observed at times in my career how a struggling culture can stymie individual and organizational growth that directly impedes the ability to achieve objectives and goals. Not long after engaging in a conversation with a friend about his somewhat stifling work situation caused by a micromanaging supervisor who is comfortable with the status-quo, I came across a video. It captured the essence of the impact an effective leader who creates a strong work culture can have on others. I have a penchant for weaving the city of Buffalo and sport of hockey into many of my posts. Bear with me so I can provide some context for the video I am sharing in a moment. The Buffalo Sabres are currently mired in the longest playoff drought in National Hockey League history. There is a renewed hope for the team due largely to the culture being established by General Manager Kevyn Adams. Now in his third year on the job, he continues to transform the organization which is having a profound effect on not only the players but every employee of the team. He has done so through a leadership style that created an inclusive work environment to unify everyone and empower individuals to utilize their talents and work together toward a common goal. The video captures a moment from a press conference with the Sabres Director of Amateur Scouting Jerry Forton at the annual NHL Draft in Montreal last week. He has been with the team much of the last decade and has suffered through unimaginable lows in an extremely high-pressure and competitive industry. As one reporter shared, Forton and others were “were made as outcasts” under the previous leadership. Sleep deprivation caused by the demands of his job, especially at this time of year, may have played a small role in his emotions bubbling over. But, most telling is to see his renewed outlook and how choked up he became when he talked about the difference in the culture that is being built by an authentic leader.
